 MtkWinFlash
Flash binary firmware in Windows

This Windows utility will flash most Mediatek chip based ATAPI DVD-ROM and CDRW drives. It supports all single file firmware in BIN and HEX format.

Which drives can it flash?
All JLMS/LITEON DVD-ROM drives and most LITEON CDRW drives, including their OEM's and rebadged. Then there are some drives from SONY, MEMOREX, LG, TDK, BTC, Samsung and from other makers as well. Attention: NOT compatible with DVD±RW drives!

ALL drives mentioned at my binary firmware page are compatible.

You must make sure your drive is compatible with MtkFlash before you use MtkWinFlash! Check up this thread in the Cdrfreaks forum and this thread for old Liteon Cdrw's. Perform a search for your drive at the relevant forums like  The firmware Forum or Cdfreaks Forum .

If you're not sure, don't flash!

Limitations in comparison to MtkFlash:
1. Can't extract firmware from drives.
2. Must have a single file binary. Firmware that comes in separate files must be first merged into a single file.

General precautions for any flashing in Windows

Standard ATAPI mode:

Read the warnings carefully!  Absolutely sure?  Press the OK button

Direct IDE port mode:

This mode sends the binary firmware to the IDE port you tell it to. It means you can now flash recognized or unrecognized drives! You can now recover dead drives simply in Windows!

Of course, you'll have to know on which IDE port the drive is connected and you'll have to be extremely careful to select the correct port.

It's now easier than ever to save a dead Mediatek chip based drive, but if you're not careful, you can very easily kill a good drive with it!

If you are not completely sure what you are doing, please don't do it!

Do NOT use MtkWinFlash on DVD±RW drives!  Try Mtkflash instead.

Tip: don't link directly to files, the link will be broken very soon - better link to the page instead.

Important for systems with nVidia nForce chipset:
MtkWinFlash does not work  with some of nVidia's IDE drivers. Disable nVidia's IDE drivers (temporarily) and enable generic Windows IDE drivers. Alternatively use Mtkflash, in true DOS.
