LiteOn SOHD-167T

As you might know Liteon has a joint venture with JVC to produce DVD-ROM drives (Jlms)

so I was surprised to see this drive being manufactured under their new partnership with Sony.

Sony is selling an identical OEM under the name DDU-1613.

There's hardly any mention the 167 on Liteon's site (nothing at all on Jlms) the only thing is

firmware download, which is 'hidden' at the bottom of the CD-ROM section!

The 167 is similar to the 166. Both have nearly the same specifications and reported performance.

However, unlike the 165/166 drives, the 167 can NOT read DVD-RAM.

A very detailed test report has been published at cdrinfo.com

      Advanced users: Tweak your drive!

There are some nice patched firmware made by
C0deKing and Code65536, known as CodeGuys,
that will enable various Liteon drives to read/rip
DVD R/RW media faster, or  in some cases will
force slower CD/DVD reading for quiet operation.
All  tweaks carry some risk, but these guys sure
know what they are doing :)
Please read the enclosed documentaion first!
Get the fix for your drive at the firmwares page of CodeGuys site

          Thanks guys!

      LiteOn SOHD-16P9S

      SOHD-16P9S follows SOHD-167T. It's a 16 x DVD and 48 x CD drive just as all drives since Ltd 163.
Liteon doesn't say anything about it so we have to go by users observasions mainly. Noticable technical
changes are belt drive mechanism for the tray and a new laser unit. Users are generally satisfied with it,
some reporting a quieter operation but some complain about slower DVD ripping speeds.

Cdrinfo has published a test comparing this drive to a recent LG model.
