Special firmwares:
For OEM, rebadged or old versions of 163 drives which are not being accepted by the flasher: Here is GH5S-all fixed by a special version of FlashFix to agree to flash ANY drive! Be very careful to select the correct drive from the drop-down menu!
Good news for EAC (Exact Audio Copy) users! The newest firmware released by Dell GDHJ, does not cache audio, making it ideal for secure mode ripping for all 163 (not D) drives. You can flash any 163 (including OEM and rebadged) using this special, region free: GDHJ-f-all (it will agree to flash ANY drive so be very careful!)
Advanced users: Tweak your drive!
There are some nice patched firmware made by
C0deKing and Code65536, known as CodeGuys, that will enable various Liteon drives to read/rip DVD R/RW media faster, or in some cases will force slower CD/DVD reading for quiet operation. All tweaks carry some risk, but these guys sure know what they are doing :) Please read the enclosed documentaion first! Get the fix for your drive at the firmwares page of CodeGuys site

What's the difference between the 163 and the 163D? Not much. They have the same specifications and there's no reported performance difference. According to Liteon the 163D has a different pickup head which in turn requires different firmware. We also know that you can't exchange firmware's between the163 and the 163D (it can be forced using Mtkfalsh or MtkWinFlash but I wouldn't recommend it)
The following firmware are only for the 163D drive:
